Trips and itineraries

Which Sumba trips do you offer?

Three private trips, 4D3N, 5D4N and 6D5N, on the date you choose, and a 4D3N open trip that departs every Thursday in 2026.

Where do the trips start and end?

Every trip starts at 12.00 WITA at Tambolaka Airport (TMC) or a hotel near it, with pick-up from 11.00, and ends at 11.00 WITA at Waingapu Airport (WGP) in East Sumba.

When should I arrive and leave?

Arrive the day before, or on a flight that lands at Tambolaka before 12.00 on day one. Fly home the day after the trip if you can: the itinerary cannot be adjusted to flight times.

How many destinations does each trip visit?

11 on the 4D3N and the open trip, 14 on the 5D4N and 18 on the 6D5N.

Who leads the trip?

A tour leader is included on every trip, and everyone follows the tour leader's directions during the trip.

What car do we travel in?

The open trip uses an Innova. On private trips, groups of 6 to 10 travel in two cars.

Can the itinerary change?

Yes: with conditions at a destination or force majeure. If the weather turns unfavourable, parts of the itinerary are changed for everyone's safety.

Prices and payment

How much does a Sumba private trip cost?

Per person, by group size: the 4D3N costs USD 390 to USD 700, the 5D4N USD 490 to USD 850 and the 6D5N USD 570 to USD 1,020.

How much is the open trip?

USD 459 per person, twin share with a traveller of the same gender. A private or couple room costs USD 99 more per room, subject to availability.

What is included in the price?

Entrance and donation fees, drone and mirrorless documentation, mineral water, 9 meals, a tour leader, 3-star hotels on a twin-share basis, pick-up on day 1 and drop-off at Waingapu Airport.

What is not included?

Flight tickets and personal belongings. Hotel room upgrades are optional extras, priced per night per room.

How do I pay?

A deposit of at least 50% secures your date, and the balance is due no later than 14 days before departure. Booking within 14 days of the trip means paying in full.

Booking and cancellation

How do I confirm a booking?

Send the transfer receipt on WhatsApp to +62 811 9941 919 with the names and ages of all travellers, a mobile number, the number of travellers and the pick-up and drop-off locations.

How far ahead do I need to book?

Registration is open at any time with no deadline; your date depends on accommodation being available.

What happens if I cancel?

The deposit is non-refundable and cannot be moved to another trip or date, but you can pass your place to someone else.

What about force majeure?

If natural disasters, bad weather, riots, disease outbreaks or government rules change or cancel a trip, there is no refund for unused parts.

What if I arrive late?

Travellers who reach the meeting point late and hold up the itinerary are deemed to have withdrawn, with no refund.

What if my flight changes?

We are not responsible for flight changes or cancellations, or for baggage damaged, lost or delayed by airlines, and the itinerary cannot be adjusted to flight times.

Who pays if something is lost or damaged?

Travellers pay for any loss of or damage to trip facilities, at the item's price. We are not liable for loss of or damage to personal belongings during the trip.

What happens if a traveller breaks the rules?

Anyone found with illegal drugs, or causing disturbances that inconvenience other travellers, may be removed from the trip or sent back without a refund.

Hotels and rooms

Which hotels do we stay in?

Sinar Tambolaka or an equivalent in Southwest Sumba, then Padadita Hotel or an equivalent in East Sumba, both 3-star and twin share.

How many nights are in each region?

4D3N and open trip: 1 night in Southwest Sumba and 2 in East Sumba. 5D4N: 1 and 3. 6D5N: 2 and 3.

Can I upgrade my room?

Yes, per night per room: a Sinar Tambolaka suite USD 15 or VIP room USD 45, Villa Sinar Tambaloka USD 35 (1 bed) or USD 40 (2 beds), a Padadita deluxe room USD 30 or junior suite USD 55.

Open trip

When does the open trip depart?

Every Thursday in 2026, running Thursday to Sunday. The last departure is 31 December 2026, returning 3 January 2027.

Is every departure guaranteed?

A departure is confirmed once the minimum quota of 4 travellers is reached.

Who can join the open trip?

Travellers aged 10 to 50 in good health, because the waterfall paths are steep and slippery. Outside that range, choose a private trip.

How are rooms shared on the open trip?

Two travellers share a room, paired by gender. A private or couple room costs USD 99 more per room, subject to availability.

Packing and health

What should I bring?

Sunblock SPF 30–50, sunglasses, a hat, snacks and supplements, a drybag or backpack, changes of clothes, sandals or shoes for trekking, a power bank, a bath kit if you like, personal medicines and wet tissue.

Do I get the photos and videos?

Yes. Every trip is documented with drone and mirrorless cameras. Bring a hard disk rather than a flash drive: the files are usually over 32 GB and are copied on day 3.

Can I opt out of appearing on social media?

The trip footage may be used for social media. Tell our admin on WhatsApp if you would rather not appear.

How fit do I need to be?

The trip involves a lot of physical activity, including trekking to waterfalls. With a history of asthma, hypertension, heart disease, acute gastritis, diabetes, epilepsy or sinusitis, see a doctor first and bring your own medicines.

Which mobile network works best?

Telkomsel has the best signal in Sumba.

When is the best time to visit?

December to March is the green season, April to May turns from green to yellow, and June to November is the yellow season. Sumba is quite hot, so bring a hat, sunglasses and sunblock.
